Whether you're sowing vegetable seeds, rooting lavender cuttings or nurturing young trees, every successful plant begins with one thing: healthy roots.

That's why the growing medium you use for propagation is so important.

While compost, light and careful watering all play essential roles, biochar can be a valuable addition to propagation mixes by helping create the healthy, balanced conditions that young roots need to establish themselves.

Why Young Plants Need the Right Start

Seeds and cuttings are at their most vulnerable during the early stages of growth.

Tiny roots need access to moisture, oxygen and nutrients, but they also need protection from extremes.

One of the biggest challenges in propagation is maintaining enough oxygen around delicate new roots.

Roots need air just as much as they need water.

Biochar helps improve the physical structure of propagation mixes by creating tiny pockets of air throughout the compost. This encourages healthy root development while helping reduce the risk of overly compacted growing media.

For cuttings that remain in trays or small pots for several weeks, this improved structure can help maintain a healthier root environment.

Helping Maintain Even Moisture

Propagation compost should remain consistently moist, but not saturated.

Biochar's porous structure helps absorb water after watering and gradually release it as the compost begins to dry.

This water retention can help reduce sudden fluctuations between very wet and very dry conditions, creating a more even environment for young seedlings and cuttings.

Good watering practices are still essential, but biochar can help make moisture management a little more forgiving.

Supporting Healthy Soil Biology

Although newly sown seeds and fresh cuttings don't immediately rely on large populations of soil microbes, healthy biological activity becomes increasingly important as roots develop.

Charged biochar provides a permanent home for beneficial microorganisms, helping create a living growing medium that supports long-term plant health.

As young plants mature and are potted on, this healthy biological community continues developing alongside their roots.

Especially Useful for Potting On

One of the best times to introduce biochar is when young plants move from propagation trays into their first proper pots.

At this stage, the developing root system begins exploring a much larger volume of compost.

Adding charged biochar to the potting mix helps create healthy conditions that can continue supporting root development as the plant grows.

Because biochar remains in the compost for many years, its benefits continue long after the propagation stage has passed.

Which Plants Can Benefit?

Biochar can be incorporated into propagation or potting mixes for a wide range of plants, including:

How to Use Biochar for Propagation

For the best results, biochar should always be "charged" before being used for propagation. Charging simply means allowing the biochar to absorb nutrients and beneficial microorganisms before it comes into contact with delicate young roots.

An easy way to do this is to mix your biochar thoroughly with mature compost or worm castings and allow it to sit for a couple of weeks. This gives the pores within the biochar time to become populated with beneficial microbes and filled with nutrients.

When preparing a propagation mix, only a modest amount of charged biochar is needed. There is no single ratio yet discovered for the application of biochar, as there are many variable factors. However, we’ve found that by making biochar at least 10% of the total volume is usually sufficient for seed sowing and rooting cuttings. The remaining growing medium can be made up of your usual peat-free propagation compost or seed compost.

We have, however, adopted the policy of “More is More” when it comes to our own propagation of saplings and seedlings. The great thing is, you can never add too much and as long as you’ve added your 10%, you can always build up from there. Also, if you reuse the soil in the future, all the biochar you’ve added in the past will still be working its magic. Therefore, the benefits will be accumulative each time you add biochar for propagation.

For seeds:

Fill trays or pots with your propagation mix and sow as you normally would. The biochar helps create a balanced environment around the developing roots, supporting healthy soil biology while helping the compost retain moisture more evenly.

For cuttings:

Prepare your rooting medium in the same way before inserting the cuttings. Biochar is not a rooting hormone, so it won't replace good propagation practices, but it can help create healthy conditions for roots to establish.

Potting On:

Once seedlings or rooted cuttings are ready to be potted on, you can either increase the proportion of charged biochar slightly by mixing it into your regular potting compost OR simply add a handfull into the soil directly around the root ball. As the root system expands, it will naturally disperse the biochar, and we really like this method because it allows the roots to use more of the biochar directly as they develop.

Either of these methods is great for the long-term benefits of biochar—improved soil structure, better water retention and a thriving community of beneficial microorganisms—continue supporting healthy growth.

Like all good gardening, propagation is about creating the right conditions rather than forcing results. Biochar works quietly in the background, helping young plants establish strong foundations that will benefit them throughout their lives.
