Improving Water Management

Water management is an increasingly important consideration in professional horticulture.

Container-grown ornamentals can require frequent irrigation during production, while newly installed planting can be particularly vulnerable to dry conditions while root systems establish.

Biochar has a highly porous internal structure that can influence the water-holding properties of soils and growing media.

The effect varies according to the biochar, soil or substrate and application rate, but biochar can be particularly useful in lighter, free-draining soils where water retention is limited.

For landscapers, that doesn't mean newly planted schemes no longer need watering.

Correct establishment watering remains essential.

Biochar isn't a fertiliser.

Successful ornamental establishment ultimately depends upon roots.

Biochar's pore structure creates a large surface area within the soil or growing medium and can provide microhabitats for microorganisms.

Over time, those surfaces interact with moisture, nutrients, organic compounds, roots and soil biology.

This is why we prefer to think of biochar as long-term root-zone infrastructure, rather than another short-lived soil additive.

Biochar in Nursery Production

For ornamental growers, biochar can be trialled as a component of container-growing media.

The key word is trialled.

Different biochars have different physical and chemical characteristics, and different ornamental crops can respond differently to changes in growing media.

Rather than changing an established commercial mix immediately, we recommend running controlled trials.

A useful starting point might compare:

Control: your existing growing medium

Trial A: existing medium + 5% charged biochar by volume

Trial B: existing medium + 10% charged biochar by volume

Growers can then assess factors such as:

  • irrigation frequency

  • root development

  • plant growth and uniformity

  • foliage quality

  • flowering

  • nutrient management

  • pH and EC

  • substrate stability

  • time to saleable plant.

The objective shouldn't be to demonstrate that biochar "works".

It should be to determine whether it delivers a useful and commercially meaningful benefit within your particular production system.

Biochar at Planting

For landscapers and professional gardeners, installation is one of the easiest opportunities to introduce biochar.

Once a tree, shrub or perennial is established, disturbing its root zone simply to add a soil amendment makes little sense.

At planting, however, you're already working with that soil.

Sweethill Biochar should first be thoroughly wetted and charged.

It can then be mixed with appropriate compost and/or soil associated with the planting area.

For an individual perennial, this might mean a modest handful of charged biochar distributed through the surrounding planting soil.

For a larger shrub, several handfuls may be appropriate.

For larger-scale installations, quantities should be calculated according to soil volume and the intended application rate rather than simply scaled indefinitely by handful.

The important principle is:

Integrate biochar into the rooting environment rather than creating a concentrated layer beneath the rootball.

Planting specifications should still follow accepted horticultural practice for the particular plant and site.

Biochar complements good planting practice. It doesn't replace it.

New Ornamental Beds & Borders

When creating an entire ornamental planting scheme, biochar can be incorporated during ground preparation.

This provides an opportunity to distribute charged biochar more evenly through the relevant upper soil profile before planting.

It can be combined with compost or other specified soil-improvement materials and incorporated according to the requirements of the site.

This approach can be particularly useful where existing soils are:

light and free-draining,

low in organic matter,

or being substantially improved before a new planting scheme is installed.**

Heavy, compacted or poorly drained soils require appropriate remediation in their own right. Biochar shouldn't be used to disguise an underlying drainage or compaction problem.

Existing Ornamental Planting

Established landscapes can also receive biochar without wholesale cultivation.

Charged biochar can be thoroughly mixed with compost and applied as part of an appropriate surface mulch.

This allows biochar to be introduced while minimising disturbance to established roots and soil biology.

Additional biochar can then be incorporated locally when plants are replaced, lifted or divided.

For professional gardeners managing a site over several years, this provides a practical way to build biochar gradually into the soil as part of routine horticultural work.

Biochar for Planters & Containers

Commercial planters present a particularly interesting use case.

A relatively small volume of growing medium has to support substantial plant growth while coping with repeated irrigation and feeding.

Charged biochar can be trialled as a modest component of the growing medium.

A starting inclusion rate of around 5–10% by volume may be appropriate for initial trials, depending on the plants and substrate.

Biochar shouldn't simply be placed in the bottom of the container.

Instead, distribute it evenly through the growing medium so it becomes part of the root environment.

For commercial installations, trial the intended mix before specifying it across large numbers of planters.

Always Charge Sweethill Biochar Before Use

For ornamental horticulture, we recommend that Sweethill Biochar is wetted and charged before application.

Do not apply our product dry.

Charging allows moisture, nutrients and organic compounds to begin interacting with the biochar before it enters the root zone. Wetting also reduces dust during handling and mixing, which is particularly relevant when larger quantities are being used professionally.

Suitable charging materials may include:

  • compost

  • compost extracts

  • appropriate liquid feeds

  • suitable organic fertilisers

  • other nutrient-containing solutions compatible with the production or landscape system.

Commercial growers should integrate charging with their existing nutrition programme rather than introducing uncontrolled quantities of nutrients.

Biochar and Peat-Free Horticulture

As professional horticulture continues moving away from peat, growers are increasingly working with mixtures of materials rather than expecting a single ingredient to reproduce every property of peat.

Biochar shouldn't be regarded as a direct one-for-one peat replacement.

Its value is different.

Its porous structure, persistence and interaction with water and nutrients mean it can be considered as one component within carefully formulated peat-free and peat-reduced growing media.

For nurseries already developing their own peat-free mixes, biochar is therefore worth controlled investigation rather than simply substitution by volume.

Biochar for Organic & Environmentally Conscious Growing

Biochar can also be of particular interest to ornamental growers working according to organic or regenerative principles.

Pure biochar can be incorporated alongside compost, organic matter and other appropriate inputs without requiring it to be pre-blended with conventional fertilisers.

This gives professional growers control over how the biochar is charged and incorporated into their particular production system.

Certified organic growers should, however, confirm the suitability of the biochar and any materials used to charge it with their certification body before introducing them into commercial production.

A Benefit That Continues After the Plant Is Sold

There is an interesting difference between using biochar in ornamental production and many other nursery inputs.

If biochar is incorporated into the growing medium around a perennial or shrub, it doesn't necessarily cease being useful when the plant leaves the nursery.

The customer takes it with them.

The plant is installed.

Its roots move beyond the original rootball.

The organic components of the growing medium continue changing and decomposing.

But much of the biochar can remain.

For growers trying to produce plants with a stronger environmental story, that's significant.

You're not simply using an input to produce a saleable plant.

You're potentially sending stable carbon out into gardens and landscapes within the plants you're producing.

Provenance Matters

For professional businesses, sourcing matters.

Biochar isn't one uniform commodity.

Its characteristics depend upon factors including feedstock, production conditions, particle size and subsequent processing.

And if environmental responsibility is one of the reasons you're choosing biochar in the first place, knowing where the feedstock came from becomes particularly important.
