Water management is becoming an increasingly important part of landscape design and establishment.
Newly planted trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants have relatively restricted root systems and can be particularly vulnerable during dry periods.
Biochar contains an extensive network of pores and surfaces that can influence the water-holding characteristics of soil.
The effect varies according to the soil, biochar and application rate and tends to be particularly relevant in lighter, free-draining soils.
Biochar doesn't remove the need for proper establishment watering, and it shouldn't be used to make unrealistic promises about drought resistance.
Instead, think of it as part of creating more resilient soil that can make better use of rainfall and irrigation.
For a landscaper handing a newly planted garden over to a client, that's an attractive long-term objective.
Help Keep Nutrients in the Root Zone
Biochar isn't fertiliser.
Instead, its extensive surface area and surface chemistry allow it to interact with nutrients within soil.
This means it can complement compost, organic matter and appropriate fertilisation rather than replacing them.
A useful way of thinking about the relationship is:
Compost feeds. Biochar helps hold.
For landscaping, where soil may be improved substantially at the beginning of a project and then receive less intensive management afterwards, incorporating a persistent material into the root zone can be particularly useful.
Support Living Soil
Landscaping inevitably involves disturbance.
Ground is cleared. Soil is moved. Levels change. Planting holes are excavated. New topsoil may be introduced.
But the ultimate aim should be to leave behind living soil, not simply a substrate capable of holding plants upright.
Biochar provides a highly porous carbon structure that can interact with water, nutrients, organic compounds, plant roots and microorganisms.
Its pore network can provide microhabitats for soil organisms, while its resistance to decomposition means that much of that structure can remain long after compost and other organic materials have broken down.
That's why biochar is better understood as long-term soil infrastructure rather than another short-term soil additive.
One Installation. Long-Term Benefit.
Landscaping provides a particularly good opportunity for biochar because you're often working with soil at precisely the moment when incorporation is easiest.
Once a lawn has been laid, a tree established or a densely planted border matured, nobody wants to dig everything up again to improve the soil underneath.
During installation, however, you already have access.
Biochar can be incorporated during:
ground preparation
new bed construction
tree and shrub planting
perennial planting
raised-bed construction
lawn preparation
planter installation
soil improvement and renovation.
The principle is simple:
Put biochar into the root environment while you already have the opportunity.
Biochar for Tree & Shrub Planting
Trees and shrubs are one of the clearest examples of why long-term soil improvement matters.
A tree installed today may remain on site for decades.
When planting, thoroughly wet and charge the biochar first.
Then distribute it through appropriate soil and compost within the planting area rather than creating a concentrated pocket or layer of pure biochar.
The rootball should not simply sit on a bed of biochar.
Instead, you're aiming to create an improved surrounding soil environment into which new roots can establish.
Biochar doesn't replace correct tree planting.
Planting depth, root flare position, staking where necessary, drainage, soil compaction and establishment watering all remain critically important.
Biochar should complement good arboricultural and horticultural practice — never compensate for poor planting.
Biochar for Beds & Borders
New ornamental beds provide an ideal opportunity to introduce biochar across a wider area.
Charged biochar can be mixed with compost or other specified soil-improvement materials before being incorporated into the relevant upper soil profile.
This distributes biochar through the future rooting zone rather than concentrating it immediately around individual plants.
Alternatively, landscapers can use a more targeted approach.
When installing individual perennials and smaller shrubs, add an appropriate quantity of charged biochar mixed thoroughly with the surrounding soil and compost.
For smaller planting schemes, this can make application straightforward:
Plant something. Incorporate some charged biochar. Move on to the next plant.
Across a large project, however, application should be calculated by soil volume or area to maintain consistency.
Biochar for New Lawns
If you're preparing ground for turf or grass seed, you have a valuable opportunity to improve the soil before it disappears beneath the lawn.
Charged biochar can be mixed with appropriate compost or topsoil and incorporated evenly into the upper root zone during preparation.
Complete final grading, levelling and firming afterwards before laying turf or sowing seed as normal.
Don't create a separate layer of biochar immediately beneath turf.
The objective is to improve the soil profile, not create an interface between the turf and existing ground.
Once the lawn has established, the biochar remains beneath it.
Biochar for Raised Beds
Raised beds are another obvious application because the growing medium is being constructed from scratch.
Biochar can be charged and mixed with soil, compost and other appropriate materials before filling.
It shouldn't dominate the mixture.
Instead, it becomes one component of a balanced growing medium.
This is particularly relevant when raised beds are being constructed for productive gardens, community growing spaces, schools or commercial developments where long-term soil performance is important.
Biochar for Planters & Containers
Commercial and public-realm planters present a different challenge.
A relatively small volume of growing medium may be expected to support substantial planting while coping with repeated watering, feeding and periods of hot weather.
Charged biochar can be incorporated into the growing medium before installation.
For initial trials, an inclusion rate of around 5–10% by volume may provide a sensible starting point, depending on the plants and substrate.
For larger commercial projects, trial the intended mixture before specifying it across multiple planters.
Existing Landscapes
Biochar isn't restricted to new installations.
Where established beds require improvement, charged biochar can be mixed thoroughly with compost and applied as part of an appropriate surface mulch.
This avoids unnecessary disturbance of established roots and soil biology.
Additional biochar can then be introduced whenever plants are replaced, divided or moved.
For landscape maintenance businesses, this provides an opportunity to gradually improve soil as part of routine management rather than undertaking a major intervention.
Always Charge Sweethill Biochar Before Application
We recommend that Sweethill Biochar is thoroughly wetted and charged before use.
Don't apply our biochar dry.
Fresh biochar has an extensive pore structure and surface area. Charging allows water, nutrients and organic compounds to begin interacting with those surfaces before the biochar enters the root zone.
Wetting also substantially reduces dust during handling — particularly important when working with larger volumes.
Biochar can be conditioned using appropriate materials such as:
compost
compost extracts
suitable liquid feeds
well-rotted organic materials
appropriate nutrient solutions.
The charging method should suit the planting specification and management system.
For large landscaping projects, charging can be incorporated into soil and compost preparation before materials are distributed around the site.
How Much Biochar Should Landscapers Use?
There isn't one application rate that's appropriate for every landscape.
The right quantity depends upon:
soil type, application, planting, biochar characteristics, existing soil condition and the other materials being incorporated.
This is important because more biochar doesn't automatically mean better results.
For container growing media, initial trials around 5–10% by volume may be appropriate.
For soil applications, quantities should be determined according to the area and depth being treated rather than simply transferring container-growing percentages directly to the landscape.
For substantial commercial projects, we recommend discussing the intended application with us before specifying quantities.
Don't Use Biochar to Hide a Soil Problem
Biochar is a soil amendment, not a substitute for proper site preparation.
If a site suffers from severe compaction, poor drainage, contaminated soil, inadequate soil depth or inappropriate imported topsoil, those issues need to be addressed.
Likewise, biochar can't compensate for inappropriate plant selection.
Good landscaping still means:
right plant, right place, properly prepared soil and appropriate aftercare.
Biochar becomes an additional tool within that approach.
This distinction is important because we don't want landscapers buying biochar on the promise that it will magically rescue poor ground.
We want it used where it can make a meaningful contribution to well-designed, properly constructed landscapes.
Biochar and Sustainable Landscaping
There is another reason biochar is increasingly relevant to landscape professionals.
Clients are asking more questions about environmental impact.
Where did the materials come from?
Was peat used?
How much water will the planting require?
Can carbon be stored within the landscape?
What is the provenance of the products being specified?
Biochar gives landscape businesses something tangible to incorporate into that conversation.
Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as they grow and store some of that carbon within their biomass.
If woody material is allowed to decompose or is completely burned, much of that carbon eventually returns to the atmosphere.
Pyrolysis converts a proportion of the biomass carbon into a much more stable form.
When that biochar is incorporated into soil, much of that carbon can remain there for a very long time.
So rather than sustainability being represented only by what you don't use, biochar offers the possibility of physically incorporating stable carbon into the landscape you're creating.
