Its highly porous, carbon-rich structure can help retain water and nutrients, support soil microorganisms and improve the growing environment around plant roots.
And unlike compost and other organic materials that gradually decompose, biochar is remarkably persistent.
That makes it particularly well suited to perennial beds and borders, where plants may remain in the same place for many years.
Why Use Biochar in Flower Beds?
Help Your Soil Hold Onto Water
Established plants may be more resilient than those growing in containers, but flower beds can still become extremely dry during prolonged periods without rain.
This is particularly noticeable in free-draining or sandy soils and in sunny borders.
Biochar's porous structure can help improve the water-retaining characteristics of soil, creating tiny spaces in which moisture can be held.
It doesn't make your garden drought-proof, and newly planted flowers and shrubs will still need appropriate watering.
Instead, biochar becomes part of creating a more resilient soil that can make better use of the water it receives.
That's particularly valuable when you're trying to establish new plants.
Help Retain Nutrients
Flower beds are continually cycling nutrients.
Plants take nutrients from the soil to produce roots, foliage and flowers. Gardeners then replenish those nutrients through compost, mulch and feeds.
Biochar isn't a fertiliser and shouldn't replace these things.
Instead, its extensive internal and external surfaces can interact with nutrient ions and help retain them within the soil system.
This is why we particularly like using biochar alongside compost.
Compost feeds. Biochar helps hold.
Compost provides fresh organic matter, nutrients and food for soil organisms.
Biochar provides a persistent, porous carbon structure that can remain in the soil for many years.
Together, they can become part of building a rich and resilient growing environment.
Support Living Soil
Healthy garden soil is alive.
Bacteria, fungi, worms and countless other organisms are continually interacting with plant roots, decomposing organic matter and cycling nutrients.
Biochar's network of pores and surfaces can provide microhabitats for soil microorganisms.
Over time, as biochar becomes incorporated into the living soil environment, its surfaces interact with moisture, nutrients, organic compounds and soil biology.
This is one reason we think of biochar as soil infrastructure rather than simply another plant feed.
You're adding something designed to become part of the soil itself.
First Things First: Charge Your Biochar
Before using Sweethill Biochar in your beds or borders, there is one important step:
Always wet and charge it first.
Don't apply our biochar dry.
Fresh biochar is extremely porous. Charging allows water and nutrients to begin interacting with those pores and surfaces before the biochar is placed around your plants.
It also makes biochar much easier and less dusty to handle.
You can charge biochar using:
mature compost
compost tea or compost extract
well-rotted manure
worm castings
suitable wormery liquid
suitable liquid plant feed
another appropriate nutrient-rich organic material.
For a simple method, thoroughly wet the biochar with water and your chosen charging material and allow it to soak for at least two hours before use.
Alternatively, mix thoroughly wetted biochar into moist compost and allow it to condition there before adding the mixture to your border.
The important rule is simple:
Dry biochar stays in the bag. Charged biochar goes into the soil.
How to Use Biochar in a New Flower Bed
If you're creating a bed or border from scratch, it's an ideal opportunity to introduce biochar.
First, charge your biochar.
Then mix it with good-quality compost or other organic matter before incorporating it through the upper growing layer of your bed.
Don't create a separate layer of pure biochar.
Instead, you want the biochar distributed through the soil and compost where future roots will encounter it.
As a general guide, biochar can make up around 5–20% of the material you're adding, depending on the application.
You don't need to replace large quantities of soil with biochar.
Think of it as a long-term soil amendment, working alongside your existing soil, compost and organic matter.
The Handful Method: Add Biochar as You Plant
You don't need to treat an entire border to start benefiting from biochar.
One of the easiest approaches is simply:
Every time you plant something, add some charged biochar.
If you're planting a perennial, dig your planting hole as usual.
Add approximately a handful of charged biochar and mix it thoroughly with compost and the excavated soil.
Place the plant into the hole and use the biochar-enriched mixture to backfill around the rootball.
Then water thoroughly.
Don't place the rootball directly onto a concentrated layer of pure biochar.
The aim is to create an enriched area of soil surrounding the developing roots.
This works particularly well when planting perennials such as:
Lavender, salvias, echinacea, rudbeckia, heleniums, hardy geraniums, delphiniums, lupins, asters and many other border plants.
The exact watering, feeding and soil requirements of individual species still matter, of course. Biochar doesn't replace good horticulture.
It simply becomes another tool for building good soil.
Planting Shrubs and Roses
Planting a shrub gives you an excellent opportunity to introduce biochar because that plant may remain in the same position for decades.
Prepare the planting hole normally.
Mix several handfuls of charged biochar thoroughly through the excavated soil and compost you're using for backfilling.
Then plant and water as usual.
The amount can be scaled according to the size of the plant and planting hole.
This approach can be used when establishing roses, hydrangeas, flowering currants, dogwoods, viburnums and many other ornamental shrubs.
Again, don't put a layer of pure biochar underneath the rootball.
Mix it around the future root zone.
Planting Bulbs
Autumn bulb planting provides another easy opportunity to gradually introduce biochar to your borders.
When planting tulips, daffodils, alliums and other bulbs, mix a small quantity of charged biochar with the surrounding soil or compost.
For a group of bulbs, a handful of charged biochar can be distributed through the planting area rather than putting a handful around every individual bulb.
Plant the bulbs at their normal depth and according to their usual growing requirements.
The biochar belongs in the surrounding soil.
Planting Annuals and Bedding Plants
The same handful principle works when filling gaps with annuals and bedding plants.
For individual larger plants, mix a small handful of charged biochar with the compost and soil around the planting hole.
For groups of smaller bedding plants, distribute several handfuls through compost across the planting area before planting.
It's an easy way to gradually introduce biochar into an established flower bed without digging up the entire border.
Using Biochar in an Established Border
You don't need to excavate a mature flower bed simply to add biochar.
In fact, if your border contains established perennials, shrubs and fungal networks, unnecessary disturbance may be exactly what you want to avoid.
Instead, charge your biochar and mix it thoroughly with compost.
Apply the biochar-enriched compost to the soil surface as a mulch, working around existing plants rather than burying their crowns or stems.
Worms, roots, fungi and other soil organisms can gradually interact with and redistribute the material.
Whenever you subsequently divide a perennial, move a plant or add something new, use the handful method to introduce a little more biochar directly into that planting area.
Over several years, biochar can therefore become incorporated throughout your border without the need for wholesale digging.
Biochar and No-Dig Flower Borders
Biochar also fits very naturally into a no-dig approach.
If you normally add compost or organic mulch to the surface of your beds, simply mix charged biochar through that material before application.
There's no need to dig it deeply into the soil.
Then continue adding smaller amounts when planting new flowers and shrubs.
Roots, earthworms, fungi and other soil organisms can gradually incorporate the material into the soil.
In other words:
Let biology do the digging.
Using Biochar When Dividing Perennials
If you divide established perennials every few years, you've already created the perfect opportunity to add biochar.
Once you've lifted and divided the plant, prepare the new planting position.
Add a handful of charged biochar, mix it thoroughly with compost and the surrounding soil, and replant your division.
It's a simple habit to adopt:
Plant something new — add biochar.
Move something — add biochar.
Divide something — add biochar.
Create a new bed — add biochar.
Gradually, you're improving more of your garden without undertaking one enormous application.
Biochar and Mulching
One of the best ways to use biochar in established ornamental gardens is alongside your normal compost mulch.
Charge the biochar first, then mix it thoroughly through compost or another suitable organic mulch before spreading.
This allows you to combine two complementary materials:
Compost provides fresh organic matter and nutrients.
Biochar provides persistent porous carbon structure.
Continue adding compost and organic matter in future years.
The compost will gradually decompose and become part of the soil.
Much of the biochar remains.
Over time, you're building both the short-term fertility and long-term structure of your soil.
How Often Do I Need to Apply Biochar?
Biochar isn't something you necessarily need to apply every year.
Unlike compost, its carbon structure is highly resistant to decomposition and can remain in soil for decades and potentially much longer.
So rather than thinking:
"I need to biochar my whole garden this weekend."
Think:
"I'm going to gradually build biochar into my soil whenever the opportunity arises."
This year, perhaps you add it to a new border.
Then you use it around the roses you're planting in autumn.
Next spring, it goes around your new perennials.
Some is incorporated when you divide plants.
Some goes into the compost you're using as mulch.
Gradually, more and more of your garden contains biochar.
Don't Forget the Compost
Biochar doesn't replace compost.
This is one of the most important things to understand.
Compost is continually decomposed and cycled through the living soil system.
Biochar is much more persistent.
They perform different but complementary roles.
That's why our preferred approach is:
Biochar + Compost
