Biochar and Biodynamic Farming: A Natural Partnership for Living Soil

Among those who practise biodynamic farming, there is a deep respect for the intelligence of nature.

Healthy soil is not simply a growing medium. It is a living community. Plants are not isolated crops but part of the wider organism of the farm. Fertility cannot be manufactured; it must be cultivated through careful stewardship, observation and relationship with the land.

These principles have guided biodynamic farmers for more than a century, and they are principles that have profoundly influenced my own relationship with the land.

Before founding Sweethill Biochar, I had the privilege of working on a biodynamically managed woodland on a biodynamic farm. Those experiences changed the way I understood soil. I came to appreciate that healthy crops are not created by feeding plants directly, but by nurturing the intricate web of life beneath our feet. I learnt to see the farm not as a collection of fields, but as a living organism, where every element has its place and every action has consequences.

Today, I continue to garden using biodynamic principles in my own garden. I still make biodynamic preparations, work with the rhythms of the seasons and strive to care for the soil as a living system. Alongside these practices, I also use biochar.

Some may assume these approaches are incompatible. My experience has been exactly the opposite.

The more I have worked with biochar, the more I have come to see it not as something that sits outside biodynamic thinking, but as something that naturally supports many of its deepest principles.

Unfortunately, Western science only discovered the connection between charcoal and soil fertility in the 1960s, when the Terra Preta (black soil) in the Amazon was examined (see our seperate article on Terra Preta to find out more about this). If biochar had been ‘discovered’ at the time Steiner was writing, I believe he would have perceived its benefits.

That is why I wanted to write this article.

Supporting Life Rather Than Feeding Plants

Perhaps the greatest distinction between conventional agriculture and biodynamic farming is where our attention is placed.

Conventional agriculture often asks, "What nutrients does the plant need?"

Biodynamic farming asks a different question.

"What does the soil need in order to become more alive?"

Everything else follows from that.

Biochar works from exactly this perspective.

Unlike fertilisers, biochar contributes very few nutrients itself. Instead, it creates the conditions in which life can flourish. Its remarkable honeycomb-like structure is made up of millions of microscopic pores that become home to bacteria, fungi and countless other beneficial organisms responsible for cycling nutrients and building fertile soil.

Biochar does not feed the plant.

It helps the living soil feed the plant.

To me, this feels entirely consistent with the biodynamic view that lasting fertility arises through healthy biological relationships rather than external inputs.

A Lasting Home for Biodynamic Compost

Compost is the beating heart of biodynamic farming.

Prepared with care and enlivened by the biodynamic compost preparations, it is far more than decomposed organic matter. It carries life into the soil.

One of the most fascinating things about biochar is the way it complements this process.

When biochar is mixed with mature compost before application, its microscopic pores become filled with nutrients, fungi, bacteria and organic compounds. Gardeners often describe this as "charging" the biochar.

Rather than simply releasing nutrients into the soil, biochar helps retain them. Rather than allowing microbial communities to establish and then decline as organic matter decomposes, it provides a long-lasting refuge where they can continue to thrive.

I often think of compost as bringing life into the soil.

Biochar helps give that life a permanent home.

For those already making biodynamic compost with great care, biochar has the potential to extend and support the biological richness they have already created.

Strengthening the Farm Organism

One of Rudolf Steiner's most distinctive ideas was that every farm should strive towards becoming an individual organism, increasingly self-sustaining and less dependent on external inputs.

This idea feels especially relevant today.

Healthy soils are better able to retain nutrients, cycle fertility and support crops without continual intervention.

Biochar quietly strengthens these natural cycles.

By helping to reduce nutrient losses through leaching, increasing water retention and providing stable habitat for soil organisms, it allows the fertility already present within the farm to be used more effectively.

It does not impose fertility from outside.

It helps preserve the fertility generated within the farm itself.

To me, this strengthens rather than weakens the individuality of the farm.

Humus, Carbon and Living Soil

Steiner spoke often of the importance of humus and living soil.

Modern soil biology is increasingly revealing just how central stable carbon is to healthy microbial communities, resilient soil structure and long-term fertility.

Biochar is one of the most stable forms of carbon found in nature.

Unlike compost, which gradually decomposes as part of the natural cycle of life, biochar remains in the soil for hundreds—even thousands—of years.

This is not a replacement for compost.

Quite the opposite.

Compost brings continual renewal, fresh biology and available nutrients.

Biochar provides a lasting framework that helps those biological communities establish themselves and continue functioning over the long term.

One brings renewal.

The other brings permanence.

Together they create something greater than either could achieve alone.

Working With Nature

One concern that is sometimes raised is whether biochar represents an unnecessary intervention.

I understand that concern.

Yet biochar itself is not a modern invention.

Natural charcoal has been created by lightning strikes and wildfires for millions of years. Some of the world's most fertile soils, including the remarkable Terra Preta soils of the Amazon, owe much of their lasting fertility to charcoal incorporated by Indigenous peoples centuries ago.

In many respects, biochar is simply a way of thoughtfully recreating a natural process that has long been building healthy soils.

It works with nature rather than attempting to override it.

Climate Resilience and Stewardship

Those of us who grow food are becoming increasingly aware of changing weather patterns.

Long dry spells are often followed by intense rainfall.

Healthy soils are our greatest defence against these extremes.

Biochar improves the soil's ability to hold moisture during drought while also helping reduce nutrient losses during periods of heavy rain.

For me, this is not simply about growing stronger plants.

It is about becoming better stewards of the land.

If we can build soils that are more resilient, more biologically active and better able to support future generations, then we are caring not only for today's harvest but for tomorrow's landscape.

Science Catching Up With Observation

When Rudolf Steiner delivered his Agriculture Course in 1924, scientists knew remarkably little about the astonishing complexity of soil microbiology.

Today we are only beginning to understand the extraordinary relationships between plant roots, fungi, bacteria and stable carbon within healthy soils.

In many ways, modern soil biology is beginning to describe what biodynamic farmers have long observed through careful attention to the land: that healthy soils are living communities, and that thriving plants emerge from thriving relationships.

Biochar does not challenge this understanding.

If anything, it strengthens it.

Caring for the Future

One of the reasons I feel so passionate about biochar is because it encourages us to think beyond ourselves.

Most soil amendments eventually disappear.

Biochar remains.

Every application becomes part of the long story of the land, continuing to support soil life, improve soil structure and lock carbon safely into the ground for generations to come.

That long view feels deeply aligned with the spirit of biodynamic farming.

It reminds us that we are not simply growing vegetables, fruit or flowers.

We are tending an inheritance.

Biochar as an Expression of Biodynamic Principles

Biochar is not one of the biodynamic preparations.

Nor does it seek to replace them.

Instead, I have come to see it as another way of expressing many of the same principles that first inspired me when I worked on a biodynamic farm and in a biodynamic woodland.

Both biodynamic farming and biochar encourage us to nurture living soil rather than simply feed plants.

Both seek to strengthen natural biological processes rather than replace them.

Both value resilience over short-term productivity.

Both encourage us to leave the land healthier than we found it.

Working with biodynamic principles has profoundly shaped the way I care for my own garden today. Biochar has never replaced those practices. Instead, it has become another tool that supports them—a way of helping the life already present in the soil to flourish and endure.

Perhaps the question is not whether biochar belongs in biodynamic farming.

Perhaps the more interesting question is this:

If our deepest aim is to cultivate healthy, living soils that will nourish generations to come, could biochar simply be another way of honouring that intention?

From my own experience, I believe the answer is yes.

Not because biochar changes the philosophy of biodynamic farming, but because it quietly supports the living soil that lies at its heart.
